AUSTIN (KXAN) - A teenage girl walking to Bowie High School was dragged into the bed of a pickup truck and nearly raped by four men, police said Tuesday.

The girl escaped during the 8:50 a.m. attack on Monday, the first day of school, near the campus, police said. That afternoon, Bowie High School parents received a letter warning them of an "incident" that caused "great concern," but were given no more details - nor did it provide a description of the attackers.

It did, however, warn them to talk to their children about speaking to strangers.

""We want to reassure you that the safety of all our students and staff is our top priority," the letter read. "We ask all parents to talk to their students about safety practices such as, always walk with a partner, do not talk to strangers, and to tell an adult immediately if a stranger approaches them."

Austin police were expected to release more details in a 3 p.m. news conference.

In a news release, police said the attack happened in the 4500 block of Normal Trail.

"The males forced the victim into the bed of the truck and attempted to sexually assault her," the news release said. "The victim was able to escape and the suspects drove away."

The truck is described as follows:

•Older model silver Ford pickup
