Ballet Austin’s Fête10

presented by W Austin
Friday 09.10.10
W Austin, slated to open later this year, with developer Stratus Properties and the Canyon Johnson Urban Funds, today announced a collaborative sponsorship that will make Ballet Austin’s Fête10 the special event of the decade. As Title Sponsor of Fête10 presented by W Austin, the hotel will interject its unique style and contemporary elegance with Ballet Austin’s signature approach to innovation. The annual event has been recognized as the beginning of the Austin social season by The Wall Street Journal.
The $50,000 collaborative sponsorship is the first arts sponsorship for the eagerly awaited Austin destination hotel, which will boast 251 guestrooms—including one Extreme WOW Suite (W’s Presidential Suite), four WOW Suites and 27 W Suites—as well as more than 10,500 square feet of event space to accommodate a small gathering or a large group. Notably, the adjacent Austin City Limits venue, in addition to studio-audience tapings of the iconic television series, will also be available for other music and entertainment events accommodating up to 3000 guests as well as seated dinners on the main floor for up to 600, fashion shows, awards programs and other stylish soirees. W Austin is in the final stages of construction just one block from Ballet Austin’s Butler Dance Education Center in downtown Austin.   read more

An esteemed brand in its own right, Ballet Austin’s Fête, named one of Austin’s “Best Black Tie Events” year after year, has become one of the most anticipated fundraiser galas in Austin, synonymous with elegance, excitement and innovation.

Each fall, Ballet Austin opens both our performance season and the Austin gala season with Fête, where Austin’s most notorious and respected business leaders, social royalty and arts patrons gather to mix, mingle, dine, dance and celebrate the magic of the arts in Austin.
The electricity of Fête10 presented by W Austin will first spark at Ballet Austin and then move over to the Seaholm Power Plant offering something for everyone!

Porsche 918 Spyder Concept Confirmed for Production - Car News

Perhaps the most wicked hybrid ever, the 918 Spyder concept will become a roadgoing reality.

When the Porsche 918 Spyder concept was revealed to the press the evening before the 2010 Geneva auto show in March, it was with the tacit understanding that the car was bound for production. After all, Porsche had never shown a concept car it failed to put on the road, and it was clear from our conversations with Porsche brass that this rule wouldn’t change under new VW ownership. The official announcement came today: Porsche will produce the 918 Spyder in “limited series production.”
The 918 Spyder is a performance hybrid with four distinct driving modes and an extra, KERS-type overboost feature like that found on some F1 cars in 2009. It is motivated by various combinations of its 500-plus-hp, 3.4-liter V-8 (derived from the RS Spyder LMP2 car) and three lithium-ion-powered electric motors—two on the front axle and one integrated into the transmission—that make a total of 218 hp. Interestingly, the 918 Spyder can function as both a parallel or a series hybrid, as the electric front axle can propel the car on its own, or in conjunction with the engine. In its thriftiest mode, Porsche states a European-cycle figure of 78 mpg. In race mode, expect a top speed in the neighborhood of 200 mph and a Carrera GT–beating Nürburgring lap time of 7:30.
Details are still sketchy as to the car’s volume and positioning, but expect the former to be very low and the latter to be very high. The 918 Spyder will be Porsche’s flagship, the brand’s attempt to set the high-water mark for dual-source power. Historically speaking, this car aims to do for hybrid performance what the 959 did for all-wheel-drive supercars. We can’t wait to drive it.

UD Replicas follows up Batman motorcycle suit with Wolverine, Iron Man

Ask yourself: What could possibly be better than your very own real-life Batman-inspired leather motorcycle suit? Well now, that would have to depend on your particular comic book leanings, wouldn't it? If your affections lie away from DC and more towards Marvel, we have some particularly excellent news to share. Soon, you'll be able to pick up a functional motorcycle riding suit made up to look like either Wolverine or Iron Man. Oh, and aTron Legacy suit is also reportedly in the works.

If your desire is to dress yourself up as the adamantium-soaked Wolverine, you can head right on over to Universal Designs to order your brand-new officially licensed riding suit, based on the actual movie suit used in the X2: X-Men United. Sadly, go-go-gadget knuckle-mounted claws not included.

If you can't quite pull off Wolverine's dual-horned head of hair, no worries. UD reassures us that it's hard at work on a licensed replica of Tony Stark's Mark V Suitcase Suit that will be seen in Marvel's upcoming Iron Man 2, which will be released in the U.S. on May 7.

In case you were wondering, there's actual safety built into these riding suits as well. According to UD, each suit "incorporates removable CE-approved body armor [and] gloves with built-in anti-skid Kevlar in the palm's leather lining." Finally, if you don't quite have a personal physique that matches your Comic hero of choice, you'll find solace in the news that there's "an interior, form-molded muscle suit sandwiched into the jacket's torso section." Hit the jump for the press release, and click on the image to enlarge.
