Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio to a family of Italian immigrants in Bueno Aires, Argentina, on Dec. 17, 1936, Francis spent his youth as a chemical technician and took occasional jobs as a bouncer and janitor. At 22 he began to follow a vocation to become a priest, and after two years as a novitiate he entered the Society of Jesus, the order known as the Jesuits, on March 12, 1960.

Pope Francis died of a stroke and irreversible heart failure, Vatican says


Francis' burial will also be a simple affair, reflecting the down-to-earth nature of his papacy. He asked to be buried "in the earth," in a tomb that will only bear the name "Franciscus." He also wants his "last earthly journey" to end at the St. Mary Major shrine in Rome, a place he has visited at the end of every apostolic trip he took during his papacy, as well as after his multiple stays in the hospital. It's one of four Roman basilicas that have special papal status.
