VISIT AUSTIN

Sections of the Zilker Park Great Lawn will partially reopen to the public this Saturday, October 31, 2026, following extensive restoration work. Severe mud and heavy foot traffic during the first weekend of the Austin City Limits (ACL) Music Festival caused significant damage to the grounds, delaying the park's original October 18 reopening date. [1, 2]
Lawn Reopening & Trail of Lights Transition
The Austin Parks and Recreation Department (APR) announced a staggered plan for the park space: [1]
  • The Western Section: This portion of the Great Lawn will reopen on Saturday and remain fully accessible to the public throughout the holiday season. [1]
  • The Remaining Sections: The rest of the Great Lawn will transition directly into setup and operations for the annual Trail of Lights festival, meaning those areas will remain closed to the general public until that event concludes in January 2027. [1, 2]
Restoration Work Completed
Over the past few weeks, city maintenance teams and ACL festival organizer C3 Presents have been working to remediate the severely impacted turf. Under their contract with the city, C3 Presents is financially responsible for fully restoring the park grounds. Recovery efforts have included: [1, 2, 3, 4]
  • Debris and infrastructure removal across the entire festival grounds.
  • Lawn aeration and rye seed distribution to repair high-traffic turf damage.
  • Irrigation system repairs and selective watering to accelerate grass recovery.
  • Tilling and screening of the volleyball courts to restore optimal playing conditions.
  • Hydroseeding the areas south of Barton Springs Road to reestablish lost grass. [1]
The Austin Parks and Recreation Board recently voted to create a dedicated working group focused on long-term stewardship and protecting the lawn from future event damage
