PETS MEXICO 🇲🇽

All updates moving forward, can be found in our "Moving to Mexico With Pets Guide".

Quick update for those of you traveling to Mexico or the USA with pets.

There is currently no ban on pet travel between the U.S. Canada and Mexico, by land or by air, as long as your pet meets the current requirements.

Both USDA and SENASICA (the US and Mexican authorities overseeing this topic) have updated their information, and the confusion from earlier this week seems to be getting cleared up.

So if you saw headlines or posts saying that all pet travel to Mexico was prohibited, that is not accurate based on the latest updates.

The requirements are the same as they have been since 2019.

If you are traveling from Canada or the U.S. to Mexico, your pet may be subject to a more thorough health inspection when entering Mexico.

Your pet should be healthy, free of visible parasites or wounds, and up to date on vaccines, especially rabies.

Mexico does not require an official international health certificate for dogs and cats coming from the U.S. or Canada. They do require a letter from a veterinarian stating your pets are in good health.

However, if you are flying, your airline may still require an official health certificate. So always check directly with your airline before travel.

ALSO..

Because veterinarians all over the US received the same notice from USDA about a ban on pet dog travel, some of them are refusing to issue a health certificate.

I assume, they will slowly but surely be updated with the new updates from USDA. If not, you can share this with them from the USDA- https://www.aphis.usda.gov/pet-travel/us-to-another-country-export/pet-travel-us-mexico

If you are traveling from Mexico back to the U.S. (or back to Canada through the U.S.) the requirements are the same since 2024

Your pet must be healthy, microchipped, and you should have a screwworm certificate from a veterinarian stating that your pet is not infected.

Sometimes they ask for the paperwork. Sometimes they don’t. But you should have it anyway.

The good news is that airlines seem to be slowly catching up to the updated information.

So if you were told something different earlier this week, it may be worth calling again and asking them to check their most recent pet travel policies.

The bottom line is this: nothing has changes, and there is no need to panic. Pet travel between the U.S. and Mexico is still allowed.

You just need to make sure your pet meets the current requirements, especially if you’re flying or returning to the U.S.
